The Distinguished Service Award

Isis Carbajal de Garcia - 2015

Isis Carbajal de Garcia joined the General Counsel’s Office at Florida International University (FIU) in 1997. She was formerly a member of the law firm of Gunster, Yoakley, Valdes-Fauli & Stewart, P.A. Before that Isis was an Associate General Counsel at the University of Florida for thirteen years, and a Staff Attorney with the United States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, Philadelphia Regional Office.

Ms. Carbajal received her B.A., with high honors, from the University of Florida, and her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she was a school representative in the Philip J. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. 

Ms. Carbajal is a site evaluation team member of the American Bar Association, and a member of the Cuban American Bar Association. She also serves on the Florida Bar Task Force on Diversity and Inclusivity. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Miami PACE Center for Girls, and is the former chairperson of the Center for Florida’s Children, a statewide child advocate organization.

In addition to her extensive volunteer service noted above, Isis has also contributed extensively to the work and strategic priorities of NACUA since joining in 1982. She has served on numerous committees, including: Committee on Program for the Annual Conference (five years, including this year); Committee on Membership and Member Services; Committee on Nominations and Elections (four years); the Task Force on Nominations; Committee on Honors and Awards; Committee on Finance and Audit; Committee on Strategic Planning (and as its Vice Chair); the Editorial Board for The Journal of College and University Law; and Committee on Professional Development (five years). She also has attended and spoken at numerous NACUA conferences during her membership. In recognition of her extensive service to NACUA, she was elected as an at-large member of the Board of Directors and served from 2002 – 2005.

In addition to her regular service in NACUA, Isis has been very committed to NACUA’s core values, and most especially her focus on civility, collegiality, diversity and inclusivity, by always encouraging members to become involved in NACUA and always looking for ways to engage them in the work of the organization. As an active member of the Hispanic/Latino Affinity Group, she has served as a mentor to many and has helped to raise the profile of this Group in recent years. In addition, she served as Chair of the Association’s Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusivity (the precursor group to today’s Board Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusivity).
