George M. Shur - 2001
George M. Shur has been University Legal Counsel of Northern Illinois University since 1983 and General Counsel since 1993. For 10 years prior to that, he was a Partner in the Portland, Maine law firm, Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer and Nelson.
Mr. Shur first joined NACUA more than 30 years ago. Since then, he has served on numerous committees, including a term as founding Chair of the Committee on Continuing Legal Education. He has also chaired the Membership, Site Selection, Annual Conference Program, By-Laws, Nominations, and Honors and Awards Committees and has been a Co-Chair of the Student Affairs Section. Mr. Shur was elected to the Board of Directors as a member-at-large in 1974 and again in 1983. In 1985, he was elected Second Vice President, serving successively as First Vice President in 1986-1987, President-Elect in 1987-1988, and as the 28th President of the Association in 1988-1989.
Mr. Shur has spoken and written extensively on a wide range of issues relating to students and student affairs. He has contributed chapters to numerous books and compendia, and his resume of papers and presentations at both NACUA and other organizations’ meetings is extensive.
Those who know George M. Shur know that his service to NACUA, and to higher education, has been extraordinary.
