Gerard D. St. Ours is Senior Associate General Counsel at Johns Hopkins University where he leads the Student Affairs and Employment practice group. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins in March 1997, Gerard specialized in employment and labor law on behalf of management clients. At Johns Hopkins, Gerard’s legal practice has focused on employment and student issues, including discrimination and harassment; affirmative action; disability law; Title IX; faculty issues; legal regulation of the workplace; wage and hour law; student and employment policy; collective bargaining and union-management relations; employment litigation; labor arbitration; student affairs and disciplinary procedure; and employment contracts. He has made numerous presentations on legal issues pertaining to higher education and employers.
Gerard earned his law and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Virginia.
Gerard is an active member of NACUA and served on the NACUA Board of Directors from 2010-2013. He has also been involved in numerous committees, such as the Committee on Program for the Annual Conference, and the Section on Student Affairs, and he served as Vice Chair of the Committee on Legal Education. Gerard has spoken at or moderated at nearly two dozen NACUA events and has spoken on higher education law at the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources Annual Conference.
In the words of his colleagues, Gerard is a member who answers the call to service when it rings, who never says no when receiving a question from a colleague, and always looks to include others in the NACUA experience. His commitment to the Association has led to several speaking engagements and presentations to other members. His respect by and for others lead to his service as a member of the Board of Directors and anyone who has ever spoken with Gerard knows that his civility and collegiality know no bounds. He embodies the NACUA core values through his leadership, mentorship, and service and is very deserving of receiving this award.
