Edward N. Stoner - 2006
Ed Stoner retired from active practice in 2005, having spent his entire professional career at the law firm of Reed Smith. Over the course of 33 years, he served as outside counsel to Duquesne University, Franciscan University of Steubenville, and Westminster College. He received his B.A. from DePauw University and his J.D. from the University of Virginia.
Mr. Stoner joined NACUA in 1985 and has attended every single Annual Conference and countless CLE workshops since then. His involvement in all other areas of the Association’s work has been equally extensive and distinguished. He is the author of nine articles in The Journal of College and University Law, including the seminal “Model University Coaching Contract: A Better Starting Point for Your Next Negotiation” and “Harnessing the ‘Spirit of Insubordination’: A Model Student Disciplinary Code,” which he updated in 2004 as “Navigating Past the ‘Spirit of Insubordination’: A Twenty-First Century Model Student Conduct Code with a Model Hearing Script.” In addition, Mr. Stoner was a member of virtually every NACUA committee, serving as Chair of the Committees on Continuing Legal Education, Program for the Annual Conference, Nominations and Elections, and Honors and Awards, as well as the Task Force on Payment of Speakers’ Fees. He was first elected to the NACUA Board of Directors in 1988 as a member-at-large, and again in 1998 as Second Vice President. He served as First Vice President in 1999-2000, as President-Elect in 2000-01, and as NACUA’s 41st President in 2001-02.
For 20 years, Ed Stoner has given selflessly and graciously of his time and experience. He has been a valued and valuable member of NACUA and of the higher education law profession. NACUA is pleased to present him with Life Membership in recognition of the warmth, respect, and personal and professional admiration of his many NACUA friends and colleagues.
