Lucien "Skip" Capone - 2015
Lucien “Skip” Capone III was University Counsel with the University of North Carolina at Asheville from April of 2010 until his retirement in 2014. Prior to that, he was the University Counsel at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 1991 until his move to Asheville. From 1977 until 1991 he was employed by the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office and was Special Deputy Attorney General in charge of the Corrections Section from 1986 through 1991.
He received his B.A. degree from North Carolina State University in 1973 and his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1977. He has served as a public member on two accreditation boards, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs from 1995 to 2001 and the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education from 2003 to 2006. Capone was a Navy Reservist in the Judge Advocate General’s Corp from 1982 to 2002. He served on active duty during Desert Storm and retired as a Commander. Mr. Capone received the North Carolina Bar Association’s Citizen Lawyer award in 2008. He is a general aviation pilot and flight instructor.
Skip joined NACUA in 1991. His record of service is both extensive and impressive. He served on virtually every NACUA committee during his membership, including: the Committee on Board Operations (and as its Chair), Committee on Web Legal Resources, Committee on Program for the Annual Conference, Committee on Strategic Planning, Committee on Honors and Awards (and as its Vice Chair), Committee on Nominations and Elections, Committee on Finance and Audit, Committee on Information Services (and as its Co-Chair), Committee on Continuing Legal Education, Committee on Membership and Member Services, and the Committee on Site Selection. He has also been active at NACUA educational programs where he served as a speaker, moderator and discussion leader at 14 events since 1996. Given his extensive NACUA service, Skip was elected to the NACUA Board of Directors and served from 1999 – 2002.
NACUA colleagues describe Skip as a humble man with a generous and giving spirit, and note his personal demonstration of NACUA’s core values, particularly his display of civility and collegiality to others at all times.
