Nick Estes - 2005
Nick Estes retired from The University of New Mexico this past spring, having served as its University Counsel for 18 years. Before coming to the University, Mr. Estes was a partner in the law firm, Bryan, Flynn-O’Brien & Estes; Assistant City Attorney, Property and Planning Section, City Attorney’s Office, for the City of Albuquerque; Assistant United States Attorney, District of New Mexico, Albuquerque; and a Trial Attorney for the Land and Natural Resources Division, U.S. Department of Justice. He received has A.B. from Harvard College and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
Mr. Estes was a member of the NACUA Board of Directors from 1997-2000. He also served on numerous committees, including Board Operations, Nominations and Elections, Program for Annual Conference, the Editorial Board for The Journal of College and University Law, the Task Force on Program Review and Coordination and, for three years, as Vice Chair of Continuing Legal Education. Mr. Estes was a speaker at numerous CLE Workshops and Annual Conferences, and is the author of an article published in The JCUL entitled, “State University Presidential Searches, Law and Practice.”
In addition to devoting many volunteer hours to NACUA, Mr. Estes is a founding board member and past president of Explora Science Center and Children’s Museum, where he will become Associate Director for External Relations in July 2005. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Public Law Section for the New Mexico State Bar and on the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque Bar Association.
NACUA is pleased to recognize the myriad contributions and many years of service that Nick Estes has given to both the University of New Mexico and NACUA by bestowing on him Life Membership in the Association. This award is given with the respect, gratitude, and personal and professional admiration of his many NACUA friends and colleagues.
