Robert J. Haverkamp - 2011
Robert J. Haverkamp retired from The Ohio State University in 2010 having served the University as a lawyer and administrator for 38 years, most recently as associate general counsel (and leader of the business and real estate practice group) since 2006. Previously, he held a number of positions in the administration, including director of real estate and research park operations (1991-99) and assistant vice president for business and finance (1996-2006). His principal areas of practice have been governance and board operations, business affairs, real estate, land use regulation, transactional law, enterprise risk management, and affiliated entities.
Robert received his Bachelor of Arts degree from The Ohio State University in 1968 and his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, also from Ohio State in 1971.
As a part of his extensive service in community and civic organizations, Robert was chair of the Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission (1987-89); president of the Ohio Association of Regional Councils (1988-89); president (1991-93) and a founding trustee of the Ohio Human Rights Bar Association; and a member of the Ohio State Bar Association Committee on Legal Ethics and Professional Conduct (1996-2009). He also has been involved in establishing, advising, and serving on the boards of a number of other non-profit organizations, including several pioneering Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) organizations. During the 1980s, Robert also was very involved in the emerging area of AIDS law, developing policies and advising with respect to AIDS legal issues.
Robert was an active member of NACUA since becoming an institutional representative in 1980. He attended 30 annual conferences, served on the Board of Directors in 2004-2007, and was a speaker at numerous annual conferences and CLE workshops. He also was a member of numerous NACUA committees, including the Committee on Board Operations, Committee on Strategic Planning, Committee on Nominations and Elections, Committee on Honors and Awards, Committee on Legal Education, Committee on Membership and Member Services, and the Committee on Program for the Annual Conference.
Robert’s significant legal skill and energetic leadership in NACUA and at Ohio State is complemented by his ongoing commitment to the mentorship and support of his colleagues, both personally and professionally. Robert was one of the original originators of NACUA’s GLBT affinity group, reminding all members that one of NACUA’s greatest strengths is its commitment to diversity.
Robert and his life partner of 22 years, Scott Sanchez, now reside in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
