Susan L. Wheeler

Susan Wheeler

Susan L. Wheeler retired in 2019 from her position as University Counsel for James Madison University and Senior Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Before joining JMU, she served as Associate General Counsel, University Counsel, and Interim General Counsel at the University of Houston System, as a briefing attorney and research attorney for the First Court of Appeals in Houston, Texas, and as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas. Ms. Wheeler has presented at numerous higher education law conferences, including those sponsored by NACUA, the Stetson University College of Law, the University of Vermont Law School. She has also made presentations on legal topics to several national, regional and state higher education professional groups. She is a graduate of the University of Texas Law School, and is licensed in Texas and Virginia.   

In addition to her service on the NACUA Board of Directors in 2003-2005, Susan served on several committees including the Committee on Webpage Legal Resources, Committee on Membership and Member Services, Committee on Program for the Annual Conference, Committee on Honors & Awards, Committee on Board Operations, and several more. Additionally, Susan had spoken or moderated at more than thirty NACUA programs, events, and association collaborations. In 2017, she was the recipient of the NACUA Distinguished Service Award.
