The University of Nebraska invites applications for the position of Associate General Counsel.

Position:  This is a full-time staff attorney position in the Office of the Vice President & General Counsel of the University of Nebraska. The Office of the Vice President & General Counsel is administratively responsible for all legal matters affecting the University of Nebraska and provides legal services to the Board of Regents, the President, the Chancellors, administrative officers, and others on the four campuses of the University system and within the Office of the President.  

This position is located in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the University of Nebraska Office of the President on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), with occasional travel to other campuses. Duties and responsibilities of this position will involve performance of general legal services for the University under the direction of the Vice President and General Counsel, with an expected emphasis on transactional matters, including drafting, negotiating, and reviewing a wide variety of contracts. The successful candidate will provide counsel and support within the University’s Procure-to-Pay model on contract matters, including, but not limited to, contracts related to procurement and acquisition, real estate, information technology, license and service agreements, as well as other duties as assigned. The successful candidate will provide counsel and support to all campuses and the Office of the President on legal matters, including guidance under University and campus policies. Exceptional candidates may be considered regardless of the expected areas of emphasis. Salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials, plus benefits. The successful candidate will be required to complete a criminal background check.

Required Qualifications:  B.A. / B.S. plus an earned J.D. degree from an accredited law school. Member in good standing of the State Bar of Nebraska, or permitted to be admitted in Nebraska under Nebraska Court Rule section 3-119 as a Class 1-B applicant within one year following the hiring date.  

Preferred Qualifications:  A minimum of three years of relevant experience as a practicing attorney. Prior experience at another institution of higher education, public employer, non-profit entity, or law firm, specifically working in those areas of practice identified above. 

Ideal candidates will demonstrate: a high level of attention to detail; excellent independent judgment and decision-making skills; excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills; an aptitude for strategic thinking; an ability to anticipate problems; a track record of timely completion of projects and assignments; effective organizational skills; the ability to handle multiple priorities and tasks; and a keen ability to summarize and explain legal complexities.
