Job Summary/Basic Function

The Assistant University Counsel position practices across the full range of higher education legal issues, with opportunities to build on existing relevant expertise and to develop additional practice areas.

Serve as a direct report to the University Counsel and Board Secretary, provide legal advice and counsel necessary and desirable to serve the University's legal interest. Provide legal interpretation or opinion, establishing mechanisms and following steps to maintain awareness of current developments in the area of law and education. Advise top administrators, faculty, and staff on matters of legal concern; inform individual employees and/or entire departments of potential practices that may lead to individual or institutional liability. Recommend the implementation or revision of policies and procedures as needed. Interact with members of the legal profession, officials of the state and federal government, and others as required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Communicate to the University community current legal practices or positions held by the Attorney General and Reporter of the State of Tennessee and Office of University Counsel and perform other related tasks and special projects as assigned.

Attorneys holding this position will be expected to work independently on the matters assigned to them and collaboratively with colleagues in the Office of the University Counsel and across the University.

Required Education

J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school.

Required Related Experience

At least five (5) years of full-time, progressively responsible relevant legal experience required.

Required License/Registration/Certification

Licensed in good standing to practice law in Tennessee or eligible for admission to the Tennessee Bar.

Desirable Related Experience

Prior higher education and/or state/federal governmental experience preferred, or similar experience in the private sector.
