Job Description Summary

The George Washington University (GW) is seeking a Paralegal to join its Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OGC). OGC provides quality legal, strategic and policy advice and counseling on a broad range of cutting-edge issues that confront a large urban private research university and medical enterprise. These matters include litigation, administrative claims, health affairs, student and academic matters, business transactions, real estate and zoning, labor and employment, intellectual property, international, and regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide high quality paralegal and administrative support.    

Paralegal Support

Under the supervision of an attorney, the paralegal’s work may include but not be limited to:

Contract Review

  • Review a variety of agreements such as academic, practicums, clinical affiliations and other legal documents for appropriate composition, terminology, and grammar.  Maintain and improve existing templates for contracts and other documents and prepare additional templates as needed
  • Provide significant support for maintaining contract management processes

●       Coordinate Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) contract review process

●       Provide support for health affairs legal compliance including but not limited to, efforts relating to contracts as well as HIPAA privacy and security, fraud and abuse laws, and other healthcare regulatory laws

Litigation and Governance Support

●       Respond to subpoenas and records requests, including obtaining responsive documents from other departments across the university and making appropriate redactions

●       Monitor electronic service of process on the university and MFA

●       Provide litigation support and assist with discovery, including e-discovery

●       Conduct legal and other research and prepare memoranda summarizing relevant laws and cases

●       Maintain litigation and administrative claims tracking reports and prepare weekly updates to OGC leadership and others

●       Assist with processing legal bills in electronic legal billing system (currently Legal Tracker)

●       Complete corporate filings with various regulatory agencies and track compliance deadlines

●       Provide support for corporate governance activities and the daily activities of the legal team

●       Assist with and support project management, process design, and the creation of standard work for various legal team initiatives for both GW and the MFA

●       Maintain attorney files

Administrative Support

Under the supervision of the Special Assistant to the VP and General Counsel:

●       Schedule meetings and maintain attorney(s) calendar(s)

●       Assist with travel arrangements and reimbursements for university-related travel

●       Perform a variety of clerical and administrative support tasks such as assembling materials, preparing documents for mail or courier delivery, creating and updating spreadsheets and presentations, photocopying, typing, filing, and preparing documents for archives.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not

preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Desired Qualifications

●       Paralegal certificate and/or training preferred

●       Previous paralegal experience at an in-house legal office or law firm

●       Strong independent thinking skills with strength in problem solving, the exercise of sound judgment, and the ability to initiate and offer constructive opinions and creative solutions to improve OGC case or matter management

●       Attentive to details and the importance of outstanding customer service

●       Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, in order to

communicate effectively with a diverse group of client representative offices,

attorneys, and staff, providing information with courtesy and tact

●       Work proficiently with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs and Sheets, document management tools such as Box, NetDocuments and Google Drive, and electronic billing tools such as Legal Tracker.

Job Classification Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 3 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 1 year of relevant professional experience, or a paralegal certificate and 4 years of relevant professional experience.

Degree/certificate must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree/certificate requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
