Manager of Institutional Risk and Compliance
Overview: MIT’s Risk Management & Compliance Services office (RMCS) seeks a motivated and experienced manager to support its Institute-wide risk management and compliance functions. The mission of RMCS is to advance comprehensive systems that guide risk-informed decision-making, address complex compliance requirements, and reinforce an Institute-wide culture of integrity and accountability in support of MIT’s mission. The Manager will develop, implement, and coordinate activities and projects that support these systems. This position reports jointly to the Institutional Risk Officer and the Institutional Compliance Officer.
Position Summary: The Manager’s responsibilities will include managing risk assessment and analysis, advancing education and awareness efforts around risk topics, developing and implementing tools and resources for risk management, and performing research and peer institution benchmarking on risk and compliance topics. The Manager will also monitor changes to laws and regulations affecting higher education and recommend actions in response, collaborate on policy and training development, manage a compliance calendar, and support MIT’s compliance efforts on specific topics (e.g., the Clery Act, the Drug Free Schools & Communities Act, foreign gift and contract reporting, data privacy, and the protection of minors).
Qualifications & Skills: Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree preferred); a minimum of 5 years of related professional experience (i.e., direct experience in enterprise risk management, audit and/or compliance); excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at once; tact and good judgment in handling confidential and potentially sensitive information; the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team; demonstrated analytical and organizational skills; and proficiency in Adobe and MS Office programs (Word/Excel/PowerPoint).
Prior work in a higher education setting is strongly preferred, as is familiarity with federal and state laws and regulatory requirements applicable to colleges and universities, project management experience, and knowledge of Dropbox and website management tools (Drupal, WordPress).
