Salary Range: up to $150,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Hours: up to 40 hours per week, exempt.

Essential Functions

Job Summary

Function: Provides advanced legal and strategic advice on a wide array of real estate matters involving multiple stakeholders.  This position functions as both a legal specialist, providing collaborative advice and counsel on real estate transactional matters, as well as a key member of the Real Estate & Property Management team, playing a critical role in overseeing and executing specialized projects within the Real Estate and Property Management Department.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Provides advanced legal advice and counsel to the university on a wide variety real estate matters.
  2. Manages significant and complex legal matters independently and in coordination with the University’s Office of Legal Affairs, Real Estate Office, external legal counsel, and UT System as appropriate.
  3. Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts related to real estate transactions, property management, and construction projects.
  4. Participating as a critical team member on major transactions, including complex Public Private Partnerships and ground leases.
  5. Project Management: Lead the planning, execution, and completion of special projects within the university’s real estate portfolio. Develop detailed project plans, define project scope, and set milestones.
  6. Risk Management: Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies. Address and resolve any issues that arise during the project lifecycle.
  7. RFP Writing: Develop and manage Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for project-related services in collaboration with the procurement office.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

This is a temporary position with anticipated funding for two years and renewal is dependent on availability of funds and departmental need. 

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Jurisprudence from an ABA-accredited school of law.
  • Admission to the Texas Bar or eligibility to practice law in Texas through a reciprocal arrangement in another state.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in contracts and project management, with a focus on real estate in a university, public, or corporate setting.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret issues and to prepare legal opinions.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with stakeholders collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated independent decision-making and problem-solving ability
  • Expert knowledge of real estate law and other relevant rules, guidelines, policies, and practices.
  • Expert knowledge of and skills in business transactions in a complex legal and policy environment.
  • Expert organizational, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to deliver high-quality work.  
  • Ability to work under strict time constraints. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with various issues unique to higher education specifically related to real estate matters.
  • Familiarity with higher education debt process and functions.
