Job Description Summary | Provide legal research, writing and analytical support to the Sr. Vice President and institution for on a wide variety of legal matters. Assist in litigation support and oversight of litigated matters, including coordination with outside counsel. Act as a management advocate in administrative proceedings. Support the transactional practice by drafting and reviewing agreements for the institution. Provide advice and counsel to campus clients.
This position will report to our newly appointed Senior Vice President and General Counsel Hima Vatti and will require daily on-campus attendance. |

Responsibilities | CONTRACT REVIEW AND TRANSACTIONAL WORK - Draft and review a wide variety of contracts, affiliation agreements, lease and other transactional documents.
- Advise clients on recommended changes and draft language consistent with the University’s position.
CONSULTATION AND PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS - Provide consultation to campus clients on a wide variety of legal issues such as leaves of absence, ADA, employee discipline, Title IX, Title VI and Title VII/FEHA investigations, First Amendment, privacy, student, faculty and staff conduct, processes, sponsored research, copyright, intellectual property, real property, landlord tenant issues, compliance and other matters.
- Work in interdisciplinary groups/stakeholders on a wide variety of higher education.
- Provide and advise on training to campus constituencies to promote compliance and prevent legal issues.
LEGAL RESEARCH AND WRITING - Conduct legal research of state and federal legislation and administrative and court decisions; conduct analysis and make recommendations on matters assigned by Sr. Vice President
- Assist in drafting legal analyses of a wide variety of university issues in areas including application of law, impact of court decisions including matters related to labor and employment law, insurance, benefits, discrimination, privacy, copyrights and patents, contracts, immigration, student affairs, faculty affairs, and other areas related to the institutional management and administration
- Contribute to the development and review of University policies. Review and recommend revisions as necessary.
LITIGATION SUPPORT - Coordinate litigation hold orders and responses to discovery requests. Review and revise pleading papers. Oversee outside counsel, including preparation of University witnesses. Assist Sr Vice President and outside counsel with case strategy and evaluating legal claims. Monitor case status.

Required Qualifications | - J.D. from ABA-accredited school with superior academic achievement and member in good standing of the California State Bar
- 5 – 10 years experience practicing as a member of the bar with strong skills in one or more of the areas of practice within scope of job duties
- Experience reviewing and revising contracts, affiliation agreements, leases and other transactional documents
- In-depth knowledge of institutional structures, policies, regulations, and procedures in higher education
- Outstanding legal writing and research experience gained from substantial practice of law
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and evaluate data, assess alternatives and formulate logical and sound recommendations
- Excellent planning and organizational skills to prioritize multiple projects under pressure and shifting demands, and to meet critical deadlines
- Advanced analytical, problem solving and counseling skills
- Proven ability to understand and handle political and practical ramifications of recommendations and act with tact and diplomacy
- Experience working in a culturally diverse environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse individual at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the University
- Demonstrated effective oral communications skills
- Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality
- Strong commitment to teamwork and customer service
- Demonstrated skill in using software applications including spreadsheet, word processing, and database applications, preferably of Microsoft Office Suite software
- Knowledge of statistical methods and techniques
