The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (“UMBC”), is a mid-sized public research university in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. UMBC is a member of the University System of Maryland. It was the first public university in Maryland to include students of all races, and it is federally designated as a Minority Serving Institution. UMBC serves 14,148 total students: 10,490 undergraduates and 3,658 graduates. Most students (94 percent of undergraduates and 44 percent of graduates) come from the state of Maryland. As of Fall 2023, 18 percent of undergraduate and graduate students were international, and over 100 countries are represented in the entire student body.
Overview:
The General Counsel serves as the principal legal officer for the University, with overall responsibility for the vision and leadership of the University’s legal strategy. Reporting to the President, as a valued member of the leadership team, the General Counsel provides advice and counsel to the University community on all significant legal matters.
Experience:
The successful candidate will have at least 15+ years of legal experience, with a solid and broad-based understanding of matters related to the legal representation of a university with high research activity. This individual should have extensive experience interacting with a senior leadership team as well as a demonstrated history of exercising sound judgment on sophisticated legal issues. The successful candidate will be forward-thinking, will possess a strong intellect, and will have demonstrated collaborative leadership in their prior roles. Experience in higher education is strongly preferred.
Location/Relocation:
Baltimore, MD. This is an in-office role. Remote candidates will not be considered.
